Venom Research

Medical Research

Many types of venom are currently being used for medical research.
Our facility provides venom worldwide towards pharmaceutical progress.

A few examples include:

Antiviral

Snake venom could help treat viruses like Covid-19 and HIV.

Antiviral Research

"Snake venoms are biological resources that have antiviral activity, hence substances of significant pharmacological value." (1)

Stroke

Malayan Pit Viper venom has been tested as an ischemic stroke treatment.

Stroke Research

"Doctors at Yale New Haven Hospital are administering Ancrod, a drug derived from the venom of the Malayan pit viper, to eligible patients who enter the hospital with symptoms of acute ischemic stroke." (2)

Lupus

Russell viper venom time (RVVT) test for investigation of lupus anticoagulant (LA).

Lupus Research

"Dilute Russell viper venom time (dRVVT) is a laboratory test often used for detection of lupus anticoagulant (LA)." (3)

Breast Cancer

Some copperhead venom has been used in research on skin & breast cancer.

Breast Cancer

"A protein found in copperhead snake venom dramatically retards breast tumor growth by both blocking tumor cell adhesion and invasion, as well as inhibiting new blood vessel development in the tumors..." (4)

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Black Mamba venom could help cure Alzheimer's & Parkinson's.

Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s Research

"Scientists in Puerto Rico are exploring how the venom of the Black Mamba may hold the cure for nervous system disorders like Alzheimer’s & Parkinson’s disease."

"Black Mamba venom attaches to very specific receptors in the brain and researchers hope they can develop targeted therapies for these brain diseases." (5)
